Hi, hope you enjoyed my last ‘outpost’. Hope you enjoyed my concerted effort to do a bit of trailblazing on your behalf. While I’m always talking about the things I love doing out of doors, the game here is to encourage many of you guys to get up on your feet and go out there and have a blast, because guys, I have to tell you this, you only have one life so you’d better make the most of it. It’s the only one you’ve got, so you’d better make it count. And doing so is not all about making the most out of your career. There’s other things you’ve got to do to make sure that your life is awesome.

As they’ve been saying for years and years; all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. But now this is the thing, Jack the lad mustn’t get too carried away with this cool philosophy, because ask any ex-jailbird, loafing around and doing no work while others get on with it ain’t so cool. Because no work means no pay, right. Ask me, I know; been there and done that. So, here’s the thing, it’s great to make space for fun stuff out of doors, but you still need to get the balance right. Get to work as you must, and leave more than enough space for you to cool off in a healthy sort of way.

The theme of this post is all about hitting the trail. So, here’s what I’m going to try and do. I’m going to try and hit you off – no, not in that way, sorry, guys, the words just came out all wrong, didn’t mean it – with a few trailblazers for you to use over the weekend. I hope it’s a few solid ideas for those guys that have spent half their lives on the couches and other places where they should never have been in the first place. I can’t expect them to get into the more extreme outdoor events which, by the way, are really cool.

A walk in the park and be free as a bird

Cool, calm and collected, that’s how you’ll be when you go for that walk in the park. For the fat guys out there, this is an outdoors jaunt that won’t make you sweat too much. There’ll be other folks in the park shifting their weight just like you. Who knows, you may even meet a decent bird that like likes you. And then the two of you can go and grab a smoothie together and go hold hands and such. You’ll hear all the other birds cooing and you’ll be under the trees. Man, let me just tell you, getting close to nature like this is just so relaxing.

Only the thing is, just don’t do it at night. It can be pretty dangerous out there in the dark. Who knows, you might just catch me there one night. No, girls, just kidding. Those days are over for me. But do I go to the park like other decent folks do? Sure I do, whenever I do get a chance (it’s been a while, lemme make a note of that one) and I always enjoy it when I do.

Join a group

You do this and you, like, get to share stuff and learn new things about yourself, and others that you never bothered about before. It’s called group therapy. And yes, there’s even group hugs. Eww, I still can’t get used to this one, still trying to get used to it, but sometimes the physical touch like this is quite edifying. It’s like healthy medicine, only without the prescription and not even with the exercise. It’s good to let it all out every once in a while and it’s good to teach yourself to be a good listener, hear what others have to say about their life’s problems.

That’s what happened to me. I was thinking, am I the only guy in the room with serious problems. No way, Jose, not by a long shot. This a good leveler for you because you soon learn that there are folks out there with even more serious problems and you like learn to not take the world too seriously and carry all the problems on your weary shoulders.

Hiking without the hills

You’ll be doing this activity in a group as well. Because what if you slip and fall? Who’s going to help you then, huh? And what if you come across a rattlesnake, what then. How you’re going to manage that on your own. And in any case, doing new things outdoors with other like-minded buddies, well, it’s a great way to make new friends and make peace with the world you’re living in. The beginner groups are usually not difficult trailblazers. You’re usually going to be on some easy gradients and you’re always with a guide who knows his way around the trail.

Go fishing every once in a while

But this time, do it right. At the stream, on the lake, or out at sea, fish in general are an endangered species, in case you didn’t know. They’re so depleted it’s got all the tree huggers out there in serous knots. But here’s the thing, you can still go fishing. Again, it’s a good idea to join a club. That way you get to fish with guys who already know the territorial waters. They’ll also teach you about what species you’ll need to carefully unhook and carefully toss into the water and let them get on with their precious lives.

And is it about fishing that is so relaxing? It seems crazy, I know, but listen to the sounds the water makes as you focus your mind on where the fish are likely to bite. Man, I tell you, it is just so, so relaxing. Right, I’m off for a bite. Chow!
