Dads Who Run: Clint Welch

This is the next installment of Dads Who Run here on cubicle dad runs.

Working parents have a lot on their plate. And as a working dad, I think we sometimes get taken for granted. It’s tough to balance work, family and life in general. Now add in endurance sports? You’re upping the ante a bit. I thought it would be nice to highlight some Dads who run! If you are a dad who runs and would like to be included in Dads Who Run, send me an email and we’ll talk!

With that said, take it away, Clint!

1. Introduction
I’m a 34 year old father of 2, a 14 year old son and a 2 year old daughter (big age spread, but we love it). We live in Galt, CA (25 miles south of Sacramento in Northern California). I’m a construction worker and a high school football coach. I’ve been coaching for 6 years. My wife and I have been married for 13 years, she’s my rock and totally supports me in my passions of coaching and running. My son, Kaleb, is a freshman in high school and plays football. He also enjoys running and is currently running around 12 miles a week and is going to run his first 10k on Superbowl Sunday. My daughter, Halle, is often my running partner in her jogging stroller. She’s been going a bit stir crazy since my surgery.

2. How long have you been a runner?
3 years

3. What are your running goals?
To keep running! I ran my first half marathon last July and hope to one day build up to a full marathon. I lost 80 lbs. from running and exercise. It started with weight lifting, bicycling, and walking. One day while walking on the treadmill I got the urge to run and haven’t looked back since.

4. When do you run? Do you schedule time or just go?
It depends on the time of year. During football season I mostly run in the mornings since we practice in the afternoons after school and I use the remaining few hours of the day to hang with my wife and kids. When it’s not football season I’ll go whenever, probably more in the afternoon since I can take my daughter with me and my son will occasionaly run with me.

5. Is it easy for you to balance everything? (i.e. work, family, running)
It’s not always easy but there is always time if you truly want to do it. Like I said, having a supportive wife makes all the difference in the world. Training for the half marathon demanded more time but you have to get creative.

6. Do you share your story? (i.e. blogging, twitter, facebook)
I’m on dailymile, Clint W., that’s where I share the most for my running. I also share on Twitter, @Clint_I_Am, but I share all kinds of other stuff on there too.
